Part 2: How To Get An Amazing Stain

One of the main factors in getting super dark henna stains is your aftercare. You’re sitting there with wet henna on your skin… now what? If you’ve read our Part 1: How To Get An Amazing Stain article, you know the basics: keep the paste on 6-12 hours, keep it warm, flake it off don’t wash it off etc.

If you have things to do other than spending the day taking care of your henna, you’re going to need some help.

Leaving the paste on long enough is crucial, but it can be tough.
Fortunately, we’ve got suggestions to help you out!

FINISHING Spray

Try ours, or DIY!

Finishing spray is basically sugar in liquid form. When sprayed onto your design, the stickiness helps keep the paste stuck to your skin. Our sprays are available in a range of yummy scents and can be misted over the paste immediately (no need to wait until it’s dry). One 2 oz bottle is enough for dozens of designs.

You can also DIY your own by mixing sugar + water or lemon juice. Combine half of each together and microwave for a few seconds until the sugar is dissolved. Use a cotton ball to dab it gently onto the dried henna design.

MEFIX Tape

Best protection for body pieces

For body pieces like arms, legs & backs, we always use Mefix. Once the henna design is fully 100% dry, you can tape over it with this medical fabric tape. You can then put clothes back over it if you like, and it will keep the design perfectly in place! We don’t recommend it if you’re allergic to adhesives, or on hands or pregnant bellies.

Don’t combine with finishing spray. Mefix works best on its own.

You can also use other medical tapes if you like; but make sure they’re fabric-backed so that they’re breathable. We like Mefix because the strips are wide and easy to apply.

Aftercare Wrap

Non-sticky & inexpensive

Aftercare wraps are another great option for body pieces. Since they have to be wrapped around whatever they’re protecting, they’re best for arms & legs. The wrap sticks to itself but not to skin, so it’s great if you don’t want the stickiness of spray or adhesives.

Wait until the design is fully dry. Then, wrap it around a couple of times, cut it free from the roll, and stick it to itself to secure.

You can also use an ACE bandage, though those tend to be longer than what you need.

What about overnight?

Whenever we can, we like to sleep with the paste on too. It’s the easiest way to keep it on for as many hours as possible with the least disruption to our day. Our favorite methods are:

  • For hands & feet: Finishing spray all over design, then wrap with bathroom tissue. Seriously, it does the job! The tissue is soft and thin, so it sticks to the design really well. If it’s not too warm, we’ll put a sock over that to hold it all in place.

  • For arms, legs & torso: Mefix. So easy to apply and has the added bonus of making it extra easy to remove the henna the next day.
